Chapter one · The beginning

Before the dance hall.

The city established City Park in 1897. An earlier, smaller shelter stood here before the 1915 hall.

The idea came first: a place for people to gather beside the lake.

We have not found a photo of that first 1897 shelter yet. If your family has one, tell us on the Facebook Page.

Chapter two · The gathering place

The hall that held a century.

In 1915, a new Pavilion replaced that shelter. Dances, concerts, weddings and reunions made it a familiar gathering place.

The same room could be a completely different memory for each person in it.

Chapter three · A practical renewal

Keeping the floor in the story.

The 2006 renovation replaced the dance floor and added bathrooms, a kitchen and storage.

A fresh floor and the everyday things a busy gathering place needs.

The city's 2024 background FAQ supplies the three historical dates. Its old project proposals are not used here as current plans.

The National Park Service City Park record and its 2006 photo reference helped us check details. City Park is the listed historic property. This page does not claim the Pavilion itself is separately listed.

The pictures on this page are drawn in our print style. The entrance shows the Pavilion as it stood before demolition. The 1915 chapter is drawn from a 1917 postcard, public domain, from the LakesnWoods.com collection. The 2026 chapter is our impression of the concept in the city's August 2026 update, not the official design. We have not found a photograph of the first 1897 shelter yet.

Keep exploring.
